Maud Hunt Squire: Exhibition History

The list below is as comprehensive as current online sources allow, though it inevitably reflects the uneven press coverage these exhibitions received. Exhibitions are listed on the month they opened. Works with bolded numbers reproduce entries taken directly from exhibition catalogues; bulleted, unnumbered entries are drawn from news articles or secondary sources. All entries were checked against Ryan's Très Complémentaires

While in France, Mars and Squire stored a considerable number of works in the United States—chiefly depending on the residence of Mars’s parents—and much of their exhibition activity took place in the U.S., particularly in Chicago, Cincinnati, New York, and Philadelphia. Several exhibitions were “rotary” (especially those of the Western Society of Artists, for which only the Chicago exhibits are listed), circulating among major cities in the Midwest, South, and East. They both benefited from press coverage in the Midwest and East Coast.

Squire’s success in France was significant: she was elected a Sociétaire of the Salon d’Automne and eventually the Salon de la Société nationale des beaux-arts. She also exhibited with the American Woman’s Art Association (AWAA) at the Girls’ Art Club. Unfortunately, catalogues for the AWAA are scarce. Contemporary press coverage—generally very favorable, though somewhat uneven—was reported primarily in the art sections of leading newspapers and journals, including the New York Herald’s Paris editionle TempsLe RadicalLa LibertéComoediaGil Blas, and Mercure de France, among others.

A YouTube video uploaded in August 2025 showcases a large number of her works but does not provide sources, titles, or dates.
