Ethel Mars - Exhibition History
The list below is as comprehensive as current online sources allow, though it inevitably reflects the uneven press coverage these exhibitions received. Exhibitions are listed on the month they opened. Works with bolded numbers reproduce entries taken directly from exhibition catalogues; bulleted, unnumbered entries are drawn from news articles or secondary sources. All entries were checked against Ryan's Très Complémentaires.
While in France, Mars and Squire stored a considerable number of works in the United States—chiefly depending on the residences of Mars’s parents—and much of their exhibition activity took place in the U.S., particularly in Chicago, Cincinnati, New York, and Philadelphia. Several exhibitions were “rotary,” (especially those of the Western Society of Artists, for which only the Chicago exhibits are listed) circulating among major cities in the Midwest, South, and East.
Mars’ success in France was significant: she was elected a Sociétaire of both the Salon d’Automne and the Salon de la Société nationale des beaux-arts, and served on the jury for certain Salon exhibitions. She also exhibited with the American Woman’s Art Association (AWAA) and the Girls’ Art Club, and later with the American Women’s Club on the rue Boissière in Paris, which organized numerous shows in the 1920s and 1930s. Unfortunately, catalogues for the AWAA and the American Women’s Club are scarce. Contemporary press coverage—generally very favorable, though somewhat uneven—was reported primarily in the art sections of leading newspapers and journals, including the New York Herald, le Temps, Le Radical, La Liberté, Comoedia, Gil Blas, and Mercure de France, among others.
