Elisabeth Spalding, 1868 – 1954

Untitled landscape, Elisabeth Spalding, watercolor on paper, undated. RH Archives.

Elisabeth Spalding (1868-1954) was a Colorado artist of landscapes and still lifes who traveled to Paris at the turn of the 20th century. Like many of her peers, Spalding studied in New York at the Art Students' League and held her first exhibition in 1892 in Philadelphia. She was a founding member of Denver's first all-women art group, the Le Brun Art Club, named for the great 18th-century French portraitist Élisabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun. Spalding was also a charter member of the Denver Artists' Club in 1893, which became the Denver Art Museum in 1923. She promoted the importance of art in education throughout her entire life.

Spalding exhibited in Paris at the Galerie Jean Nart and at the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts. Though it's not clear if she ever resided or exhibited at 4 rue de Chevreuse, the above watercolor, signed but not dated by the artist, connects her to the property.
