Sources: Florence Esté

There are very few biographical sources on Florence Esté. Information on Wikipedia and AskArt is meager. Her activities were mentioned in numerous small snippets of information gleaned mainly in the U.S. newspapers listed below, or in the reviews of exhibitions, which mainly identify her name (sometimes the title of her works) in the list of those represented. French sources are equally scant, although it seems that Saint Briac’s town hall obtained quite a few of her works and their archives will be the object of future research. Thornton Oakley published extracts of some of the letters he received from Esté, and it seems she was a prolific letter writer, but we have not yet had the opportunity of conducting research at Archives of American Art or those of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, among others.

The Orsay Museum in Paris owns two of her works La vallée and Carte de visite.
